Mission 1: The Robot's Heartbeat

Every robot runs on a loop. This is the whole first program. Press play on the simulator, then open it yourself and make the heart beat faster.

MakeCode blocks: forever, show icon big heart, pause 500 ms, show icon small heart, pause 500 ms

Kids start with blocks in MakeCode.

No computer handy? Be the robot: one person calls "beat, wait, beat, wait," and the other loops until they hear "stop."

Members get the full mission every week: the build, why it works, a Pro challenge, a bug hunt and a quick quiz.

Your guide

GN2R and a merry band of pirates

Robot pirate flag: a mechanical skull in a captain's hat over crossed bones. GN2R, a round-headed gray and coral robot with big pale eyes.
Here be the course we're chartin' today, mateys.

One club, three names, one job: Robot Logic Lab is the school. Gunterbots is the company. GN2R (say it Gunter) is your robot guide. Members are the crew.

We've already been sailing. One of our favorite quests is casting our own robot wheels — 3D-printed cores, rubber treads, grippy enough for the living-room floor. That's the pirate way: make the part if the store doesn't have it.

The idea

Real robots at home. A mission every week.

The kid writes the programs. The robot actually moves. A live roboticist shows up once a week to get the crew unstuck.

Primary

Kids 8–14

Homeschool crews, kids whose school has no robotics team, anyone with a table and a hallway. Utah first, then anywhere you can park a small robot.

Also

Kids at heart

Adults who always wanted to build robots, retirees, grandparents building side by side. Same missions, Pro difficulty.

The edge

A roboticist teaching

Walter Gunter teaches how to think through a problem, not which blocks to drag. Useful to a 9-year-old and still interesting at 50.

A member's week

About two hours. Something to show by the weekend.

Monday

Mission drops

The story, the big idea and the build, step by step with pictures.

Mon–Sat

Build it

1–2 hours, Rookie or Pro. Simulator or the real robot.

Anytime

Logic puzzle

A short unplugged brain-teaser. Car, dinner table, no screen.

Thursday

Office hour

Inventor drop-in. The kid brings the robot. A grown-up does not need to sit in.

Weekend

Show it off

A 30-second video in the showcase. Robot only. Earn the badge.

What they'll build

Your teacher

A working roboticist, on Thursday nights.

Walter Gunter Jr. is a roboticist in Utah. He has built autonomous machines for farms, warehouses, and aircraft, and he still builds at home with a micro:bit. Robot Logic Lab is a Gunterbots school — the teaching arm of Gunterbots LLC, and the class he wished existed: real hardware, real logic, no busywork.

Inventor office hour is optional drop-in help: the kid brings the robot, gets unstuck, leaves. A grown-up does not need to sit through it. Questions go there, not into a ticket queue. Past sessions become a searchable library.

Questions

Before you join

Do we need a robot on day one? ▾

Programming, driving, and sensors run in the free MakeCode simulator — no kit. Physical movement (a rover on the floor, a tape track) needs the Year 1 kit. The kit is about $50–60: micro:bit V2 plus a Cutebot (or Maqueen with board ~$54), bought from the maker, batteries extra. Add-ons like extra servos are optional, never required to finish the week.

What ages is this for? ▾

Kids 8–14 on Rookie, older kids and adults on Pro. Same weekly mission, two difficulty levels. Grown-ups who want to build too are welcome on Pro — same crew, same Thursday.

How much time is this, really? ▾

Plan on 1–2 hours of building during the week. Inventor office hour is Thursday, drop-in, 60–90 minutes. The kid can skip a week and catch up from the library.

Do live sessions need a parent? ▾

Explorers have none: a Monday mission and a build at home. Inventor Thursday is optional drop-in help. The kid comes on with the robot. A grown-up does not need to sit in or teach. For kids under 13, someone should be in the house. Sessions are recorded.

How do you keep kids safe? ▾

The grown-up who pays creates and manages the accounts. There are no private messages between members. Showcase posts are approved before they appear. Office hours are recorded. For kids under 13 we collect only what we need, with parent consent (US COPPA). Chatbot missions can be demoed in office hours so the kid still drives; a grown-up stays nearby because of age limits.

When does it start? ▾

Founding families open late October 2026. Public launch follows in November, in time for holiday gift subscriptions. Join the waitlist and you'll get the free 5-day Robot Starter Challenge — no kit needed — while we finish Season 1.

Monthly, a season, or summer — what's the difference? ▾

Monthly is the ongoing club, billed each month. Pause any month. A season is 12 weeks of missions plus a catch-up week — three months, paid once. Fall is September–November. Spring is January–March. Inventor includes one Thursday office hour each of those 12 mission weeks. Explorer season is $117 ($39 × 3). Inventor season is $297 ($99 × 3). Same dollars as three monthly bills; pick monthly if you might pause. Summer is Robot Rescue Camp, four weeks in June or July.

What is the founding gift? ▾

For the first 20 families: Explorer $29/mo or Inventor $79/mo (or $87 / $237 a season) for as long as you remain a member. Pause a month and the rate is waiting when you return. Cancel and rejoin later, and public pricing applies. You also get a GN2R pirate patch, a Founding Family badge, and a name on the Founders wall. Honest feedback helps us steer. A public testimonial is optional.

Can we use homeschool or ESA funds? ▾

Inventor at $297 a season is sized for family education accounts: about 7.5% of a Utah Fits All $4,000 award. Arizona ESA, Florida PEP, and Oklahoma's parental-choice tax credit list tutoring and online instruction as eligible categories. We are not automatically an approved vendor. Ask your program before you spend, and keep the kit (~$50–60) as a separate materials line.
